anodyne is pleased to present Vermont–based artist Stephan Fowlkes in his series, New Works on Wood. Pine wood “canvases” are treated with acrylic and wood stain paint, lacquer, and etchings, creating a sense of antiquity and “Zen-like quietude.” To compliment these elements, natural geometric shapes and patterns are designed in layers over the surface. Fowlkes’s primary material, wood, is chosen for it’s dynamic role between painting, in which it is the surface, and in sculpture, in which it is the malleable object. As a result, we find a complex exchange between the two mediums, and a dichotomy between the organic fluidity of wood/nature and the organized structure of his technique.

*Stephan Fowlkes will also be showing New Works on Wood at 117 W. 21st Street. Exclusive Viewing and Cocktails on September 12, 2002, 6:00 - 9:00.
