Cuban painter Sandro Guerra has taken off in a new direction in this much-anticipated exhibit. Realist, Velasquez-esque portraits, painted in subtle, neutral tones, focus on socio-political and cultural aspects of the people of Cuba. Guerra’s paintings are inspired by Warhol, in their almost compulsive repetition of portraiture, and by Lennart Anderson, in painterly technique. The paintings are permeated with a solitary, almost hypnotic mood. The subject, a lone trumpet player, is often set in a stark background—a silent space, in which his musical instrument is his only companion. Guerra brings up issues of immigration, Catholicism, and identity all within the private space of his single subject.
