Peter Gerard, a filmmaker and photographer, turns the mundane experience of a daily commute through an urban setting into a voyeuristic, “Big Brother” display of strangers watching strangers. His fascination with the psychology of civilization has driven him into a devoted investigation into the interaction between strangers, and the personality of day in, day out repetition. Black and white photographs portray people waiting—waiting for their bus, their lover, their future lover, or just waiting for their shift to end. Although they have completely disconnected lives, these strangers all share the same, ominous facial expression and solemn stance. This is, as Gerard implies, a reaction under the assumption that they express these emotions in privacy, quite unaware of the constant surveillance that surrounds them.
